Stones on DECCA

Aftermath

Mono LK 4786 / Stereo SKL4786

Issued in UK on April 15th 1966

This one exists in both Mono and Stereo versions. The fourth album on DECCA in UK is again a high sale volume LP. Lots of versions are existing, both on the cover and on the labels. One legendary cover option to look for is the so called “Shadow Cover”. Musically this was a special LP as it is the first LP issued that had only original Jagger – Richards songs, no covers at all. This is the UK version of the album and is not to be mixed with the US version as that one had a different cover and partly other songs on it. The UK version was also sold in the rest of Europe.

Vinyl versions

Grooved Label

Both Mono and Stereo LP’s can be found with grooved and non-grooved labels. This indicates that mono LP’s were pressed up to the end on the 60’s. No other differences are existing.

Cover versions

"The Shadow cover"

The most famous cover version on Aftermath is the so called “shadow cover”. This is the very first printing of the sleeve. For some reason, the shadow under the album title was quickly removed. The title was printed without the shadow for the rest of the lifespan of the LP.

Some of the early sleeves made after the correction of the shadow has a spillover of red colour on the letter T. The red colour can also be visible on the lower part of a few other letters.

Mono and Stereo on the front cover

Naturally the front page LP numbers are different for Mono and Stereo.

One interesting reprint is existing. This is originally a Mono cover but changed into a Stereo cover just be covering the Mono number and adding the Stereo number. This is probably done in the late 60’s when the sales of Stereo albums had taken over. They probably had a lot of extra Mono covers that were not needed.

At least two copies of the same correction have surfaced in Holland with Dutch stereo Aftermath LP’s inside. This may indicate that this reprint was actually done in Holland and not in UK.

Mono and Stereo on the back cover

The “shadow cover” had also a minor design difference on the back cover. Only the Shadow covers seems to have the MONO LK4786 text split into two lines whereas the non-shadow covers have the information on one line.
Please note that fake “shadow covers” were on the market in 2019. They are easy to detect if you do your homework and study this page carefully before purchasing a shadow sleeve.

All Stereo albums have the same design on the back cover.

Printed By

All covers have the same Printed By text on the back cover. No variations are known to exist.

“Printed in England by Robert Stace.”

Label versions

Lots of label version are existing. Again because of the big amount of LP’s pressed. Here are a few of them. Mono LP’s have so far been found only with the non-boxed label and Stereo LP’s can be found with both non-boxed and boxed labels.
